5028 Schatz Ship's Bell Clock The first implementation of the "Ship's Bells" watchkeeping system - long before clocks - was a man, a sandglass and a bell! To fall asleep at this post was a serious offence, as it could throw the entire ship out of synch. When clocks became reliable, and a clever inventor linked one to a separate bell, the whole process was thus automated and vastly improved.
